Food supplement
Food supplements, regulated as foods in the EU, are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect with the purpose to supplement the normal diet. Supplements may be used to correct nutritional deficiencies or maintain an adequate intake of certain nutrients. As an addition to a normal diet food supplements are available in “dose” form, such as pills, tablets, capsules, liquids or powders in measured doses.

Lactulose is a non-digestible carbohydrate and acts as a fibre-like substance. In food supplements, such as the Colowell® products, lactulose is used as an energy source for friendly bacteria in the gut. So, lactulose containing food supplements support a healthy gut by helping colonic lactobacilli and bifidobacteria to grow.
